You flip the bottle.
You read the label first.
You know that “fragrance” is a trade secret exemption that can legally represent hundreds of undisclosed proprietary chemicals. You know “natural” is unregulated. You know “dermatologist-tested” tells you nothing about what was tested or what the results were.
You are looking for a formulation with nothing to explain, nothing to soften, and no fine print. An ingredient list short enough to hold in your head without effort.
No. 3 has three ingredients. You just read them.
Three Ingredients.
Why These Three.
Every ingredient earns its place. No carrier oils added to bulk up the bar. No preservatives because there is nothing that spoils. Fewer ingredients is not a compromise — it is a higher standard of formulation confidence.
-
01
Saponified Avocado Oil
High in oleic acid, vitamins A, D, and E, and plant sterols. Selected for its fatty acid profile and affinity with skin. Contributes conditioning and moisture retention without added emollients.
-
02
Saponified Coconut Oil
Provides firm bar structure and cleansing lather. Lauric acid content gives natural antimicrobial properties. Does the cleaning without requiring a secondary surfactant.
-
03
Saponified Olive Oil
The foundational Castile oil. Rich in oleic acid and squalene, both of which mirror the skin’s own lipid composition. Centuries of proof. No substitutions needed.
“Saponified” means the oil has been reacted with sodium hydroxide to produce soap. The sodium hydroxide is fully consumed in the reaction. Zero free lye in the finished bar.
What We Chose
Not to Add.
Every ingredient not on this list was a deliberate decision. Not an oversight. Not a cost cut. A choice made because nothing additional improved the formulation enough to justify its presence on the label.
-
No Fragrance or Fragrance Compounds
The word ‘fragrance’ on a label is a trade secret exemption. We do not use it because we do not need it and have nothing to hide behind it. Not synthetic, not ‘natural,’ not masking fragrance.
-
No Surfactants Beyond Saponified Oils
SLS, SLES, and similar surfactants exist to boost lather in cheaper formulations. Coconut oil saponifies into a naturally effective cleanser. No secondary surfactant required.
-
No Preservatives
Preservatives extend shelf life for formulations that contain water or perishable additives. A three-oil bar does not need them.
-
No Colorants or Dyes
Color in bar soap communicates nothing about its performance. The pale gold of No. 3 is the natural color of the oils after saponification.
-
No Palm Oil
No. 3 uses coconut oil to achieve bar hardness, a decision made on formulation merit.
-
No Fillers or Extenders
No. 3 is 100% saponified oil. Every gram is active, functional ingredient.
Specific Questions.
Is there any masking fragrance?
No. Masking fragrance is added to cover the smell of other ingredients. Because No. 3 contains only saponified oils, there is nothing to mask. No fragrance compound of any kind is present, including those labeled ‘natural fragrance’ or derived from essential oils.
What does “saponified” mean?
Saponification is the chemical reaction between a fat or oil and sodium hydroxide that produces soap and glycerin. The sodium hydroxide is fully consumed in the reaction. All bar soap is made through this process.
Is it vegan?
Yes. No. 3 contains only plant-derived oils: avocado, coconut, and olive. No animal fats or animal-derived ingredients of any kind.
Does it contain palm oil?
No. No. 3 uses coconut oil to achieve bar hardness, which avoids palm sourcing entirely.
What is the actual color of the bar?
A pale, warm gold — the natural color produced when avocado, coconut, and olive oils undergo saponification. No colorants, dyes, or pigments added.
Is the lather from SLS or from the oils?
The lather comes entirely from saponified coconut oil. No secondary surfactants, foaming agents, or SLS of any kind.
